Check that you have built up the base colour enough, and that the form is fully shown. Once you start using the top colour, you don't want to return to the base colour, which can be lifted and mixed in, causing the two to become muddy.

Mix the top colour of the apple, which forms the surface and final colour. This is often a bright red, such as Cadmium Red, building to a deep red such as Alizarin Crimson. Test it on your scrap of paper, then try it over the test area you used for the base colour. Hopefully the combination of the two will create the final colour; if not, try again. Dilute the first bright red wash to a manageable level. Here, I have used Cadmium Red, mixed with a little Cadmium Yellow, in a very dilute wash, to work out the coloration and curves. There is enough to concentrate on, laying this glaze over the curved surface, so do not worry about the depth of colour here. Still using a large (size 6) brush, lay the red glaze and lift off your brush through the areas of shine to keep them white for now.
